I collect words the way some people collect handbags. They don’t all get used every day, but some are just too luscious and must be added to my collection. Maybe one of these organizing words of the day can help your home, life, or photos.

Proprioception means knowing where your body is in space and time. Call it a sixth sense. Proprioception is part of why some people make great professional organizers. We not only know literally where we stand, but we can efficiently move things around to just fit where they should go.

Proprioception has been called magic more than once, but it’s just a really good sense of geometry and time. If you are always knocking things off of surfaces and bumping into things, your proprioception is off. I’ve noticed that, like most senses, I can improve my proprioception by slowing down, noticing where I am, and handling things with care and purpose. When I’m tired, feeling unwell or off, I drop things, and it takes longer to put them away. Good proprioception makes organizing easier and more precise.

A scotoma is a partial loss of vision. A mental scotoma is an elevated way of pointing out a figurative blind spot, or “a blind spot” in a person’s psychological awareness, the person being unable to gain insight into and to understand their mental problems, lack of insight,” according to the freedictionary.com. We all have them. Some people buy the same thing over and over again, not realizing they already own something similar or something that does the job. Like my guy with 35 coffee makers. And my gals with 100 tote bags (we know who we are).

Semiquintcentennial is the word we didn’t know we needed before we started to think about the 250th anniversary of America’s founding. It’s a long Latin word that means half of five hundred. We’re doing a lot of semiquintentennialling here in Philadelphia this year.

Decanting is now an influencer trend. When I was growing up, I only heard about decanting brandy, and I thought it had something to do with letting the air in. But it really means to pour (a liquid, such as wine) from one vessel into another according to Merriam Webster. Or, more generally, another dictionary definition is to pour out, transfer, or unload as if by pouring.

You can decant so many things to make them more organized. Yesterday a journalist asked if it’s a trend that works for most people. Honestly? No. Decanting moves things from one package to another container. Brandy has never been involved in my decanting…yet. You have to have the interest, time, and a little bit of skill to pick the right container and funnel contents from one bag into an another container spill-free. Who would do that in our crazy busy world? It’s not for everyone. But that’s why there are professional organizers. We make order out of chaos every day. If chaos makes you crazy, we can reduce or maybe even eliminate it one or more corners of your life.

That leads me to my last word of the day: CHAOS. This isn’t the dictionary definition, but I have always like the pneumonic definition: Can’t Have Anyone Over Syndrome. If you avoid having people over because your place isn’t all that you want it to be, or you feel that there’s just not enough time in the day to prepare for guests, please get in touch.
