Happy spring! Few things make me happier than saying that. Woohoo! I brought my own flowers (on my boots) just a few weeks ago at the home show, but I’m glad spring is here for real! If you are itching to lighten your mood and your home’s decor, take stock of what today’s home decor trends are call for.
Patterned rugs make such a big statement at a small price, and require no special installation. Even a new doormat can change the entire look of an entry. Smaller area rugs as hallway runners or accent pieces can be fun. Larger, room size rugs can often be had for $150 at HomeGoods.
Metallics are still in, and offer a fun way to glam up a space with accessories. Rustoleum has many metallic finishes, including a some fun ones like Mirror Effect paint, which let’s you turn any glass into a silvery mirror finish. RubN’Buff is also very popular way to knock off higher end glam looks with hardware updates. Think of these touches as jewelry for your home.
This year’s Pantone Color of the Year, Living Coral has signaled that the trend these days is for more vibrant, true, and clear colors, as opposed to muted color tones we’ve seen recently.
Living coral goes well with it’s playful compliment turquoise, or make a dramatic statement with navy. The triad of yellow-green and blue-violet are all spring colors, if you think about it. And despite what you might guess, analogous colors of orange and red can look great layered together with Living Coral. If your home has any of these colors, you might be able to introduce a few touches of this year’s hot color in accessories and artwork to freshen up the space. Not sure you can be that bold? Take a look at this beautiful office space we accented in soft coral, a close cousin.
DIY and upcycled vintage is still very much a hot trend, especially for spring. More people can get outside or back in their garages to update a vintage piece with Chalk Paint decorating coating from Annie Sloan and other techniques. (You can see an example of this here). Pinterest continues to fuel this trend, and doesn’t seem to be losing any steam. Why would it when DIY is all things frugal, empowering, and even eco-friendly? Come to the hands-on workshop I’m presenting Friday 3/21 at Habitat for Humanity ReStore in Horsham, PA to learn how to turn household discards into organizing gems…for less. Please be sure to RSVP, as I hear seats are filling up.
The hot new neutral? Gray is still the it color when you don’t want to fall back on boring old beige. Surprising grays include Sherwin Williams Chinchilla SW6011, Versatile Gray SW6072, and Samovar Silver SW 6233, all of which work well together. Combine your gray with a little shimmer and a pop of color, and it all says spring.
What Spring decorating trend are you most excited about?
I enjoyed this article — p.s. my go-to fave color is SW0055 Sherwin Williams Light French Gray!
