Let’s feature another home office transformation today. Hopefully you’ll pick up some inspiration here, and keep reading for a giveaway for the cute Washi tapes we used in this project.

Office Makeover and Washi Tape Giveaway

This is a guest room/office combo, like so many of us have. The homeowner has a lovely, colorful home, but she ran out of steam in this multiple-purpose space. Rather than have a cluttered catch-all, she was ready to add some style, but in keeping with her goal of living simply and using or re-using found treasures.

Here’s the before:

Office Makeover- before

The only items we purchased were a pair of low bookcases. The client wasn’t sure that they’d be enough to hold all of her books, but I knew they’d be just right. At just $10 each, these real wood shelves are as thrifty as they are sturdy. They are also just the right height to act as both a headboard and nightstand when the air bed is set up for guests.

Office Makeover bookshelves

Here’s where we have the first of three little projects with Washi tape from Downtown Tape, that tied it all together. Sometimes the little details are what make the largest difference. These bookshelves are plain jane, but we used Washi tape from Downtown Tape to glam them up just a bit. The effect is not unlike fancy wood inlays that can cost you big bucks.

The lampshade was another easy project. Using a “found” shade and two different tones of Washi tape, we now have a lamp that compliments the other style and colors in the room.

The last little change was a little labeling. You might have seen my post earlier about just using Washi tape to “label” your phone charger, but here we did add labels right on top of the Washi tape. I love how we used different colors for each drawer, which is great for visual learners, but they all still coordinate.

Here’s the batch that I started with. Aren’t they cute???

OK, now it’s your turn. There are several easy ways to enter the giveaway for your choice of 10 rolls of your very own Washi tape from Downtown Tape. Good luck, and let me know what you would perk up with these cuties! You can get lots and lots of inspiration for crafts and gifts over at www.DowntownTape.com.

Just reviewing my notes from the National Association of Professional Organizers conference (#NAPO2013), which happened in New Orleans last week. I’m doing the suggested half-day (ok, maybe an hour) review of my notes and setting of goals based on my time there, and some things are too good not to share.

You probably saw the few videos that I and my colleagues made sharing our AHA moments.  You can catch up on them over at http://www.youtube.com/user/DarlaDeMorrow. I was also just tickled pink to get to meet my idol, Julie Morgenstern, who wrote one of the most solid organizing books, Organizing from the Inside Out:The Foolproof System For Organizing Your Home, Your Office and Your Life
.

I finally got to meet my idol at NAPO2013, Julie Morgenstern!

I finally got to meet my idol at NAPO2013, Julie Morgenstern!

I have several organizing goodies that I’ll be giving away on future posts, so stay tuned, and have your friends subscribe to my posts so they can get in on the goods.

I also learned that those pictures you take of yourself while looking in the mirror are called a “selfie.”

Here are my favorite one-liner lessons from conference:

  • Multi-tasking is a myth; there is only rapidly shifting attention. The science shows this to be true!
  • “Don’t believe everything you think.”
  • When purging, ask yourself, “Does this just seem important because I’m looking at it right now?”
  • An email inbox is NOT a to-do list, but even super smart people have to learn this.
  • Procrastination does not equal lazy. It usually means that energy levels (best times of day) are not well matched to tasks selected.
  • Motivation can be improved by seeing positive results. You don’t have to change everything, you just have to change enough of the pieces to get you over the Magic Threshold (similar to the tipping point).
  • Professional Organizers aren’t therapists…except when we’re the only ones in the room, and then we are!
  • If you never fail, it doesn’t mean you are awesome; it means you are never pushing yourself.
  • You can have a great batting average, but staying in the Little Leagues forever isn’t the goal.
  • If you’re having trouble getting started, the first step is too big. Break it down.
  • The traditional challenge of paper clutter has morphed into mobile clutter>>cloud clutter>>digital clutter!
  • Strive for paperLESS, not paperFREE!
  • Just scanning isn’t enough.  You still need to maintain and “straighten” your digital files every few months.
  • Staple removers are essential equipment in the new world of scanning.
  • Willpower= the ability to do what matters MOST to YOU, even when challenges present themselves.
  • Willpower is a SURVIVAL instinct, but is not always well adapted to our modern world.
  • Frame and practice your willpower workout in this way:

1. Identify big goal/vision (I want…)

2. Choose commitment (I will…)

3. Notice what gets in the way (I won’t…)

4 Pay attention, flex your willpower, repeat.

  • Willpower is contagious!  Who knew?? Your friends and family can really make you fat. Wow!
  • Distress tolerance, despite being unAmerican, is something that can help us be more successful. We need to accept inner discomfort when seeking change. Avoiding discomfort does not move us forward.
  • Mindfulness (thinking about thinking and accepting discomfort that comes with change) can reduce cravings and discomfort, allowing us to move to new habits and systems.
  • Willpower is driven by physiology (cortisol, brain anatomy, hormones, etc.), but not by genetics. We can train our brain for more willpower!  Praise God!
  • The amygdala, an ancient part of our brain, often does our subconscious thinking, despite our evolved state.  We can affect other people’s amygdala reactions by improving our non-verbal communication, and allowing them to feel discomfort but not distress. Reframing to the positive end-goal helps greatly.
  • Accountability in an organizing relationship is to the client’s self, not to me.
  • “Stuckness” responds well to having more responsibility, not less.  But the responsibility has to be from the party who wants the change, not from outside.
  • “Why shoot for the keyhole, when the doorway is wide open?”
  • The Productivity Chain can help identify what part of our systems and habits are causing overwhelm and under-performance.
  • Brand EVERYTHING you do. You never know what will go viral.
  • Live with transparency. It’s just too easy to dig up dirt.
  • Learn to write. Even Peter Shankman, one of today’s top ADHD globe trotters, has no tolerance for twitter style writing, do U? Good communication skills still make a great first impression, even in 140 characters or less.

Now, you can feel like you were there, too, but without the spicy food and Hurricane hangover! I’d love to hear if you have questions about the conference.

Spring is a great time to do financial spring cleaning, as you are getting ready for taxes, or just after you’ve filed.  File tax support documents and completed taxes in a labelled folder, envelope, or box, and keep for seven years (or as your tax advisor recommends). After that time period, keep just the 1040′s, and then shred receipts and other bulky items.

If you need some motivation to get you started, check out classes like the Filing Freedom class from HeartWork Organizing.

Not feeling the paper?  Organize with some pretty accessories.  File folders are available in pretty colors, these days. It may seem frivolous, but if that’s what it takes, then go ahead and splurge!

how to organize with file folders

Spring is also the season for community shredding events.  Google your city or region + “shredding event” to find events near you.  They are usually free or very low cost, and often shred your documents on the spot. I’ve published a handy list of Philly area shredding events for you here.

financial organizing

You don’t need to shred everything with your name and address on it, which are both easily gotten from a quick google search.  Instead, be certain to shred anything with a financial account number showing, and recycle the rest.

Remember that you’ll want to keep more documentation if you take the home office deduction or run a business or independent consultancy from your home. Check with your tax advisor to be sure you are keeping enough data, and not too much. There’s good news in 2013 from the IRS about simplified filing for your home office tax deduction.

Most households have the equivalent of about two file drawers of historical paperwork. You might challenge yourself to see if you can get down to about that amount, and live within your filing space without taking over the dining room table.

If you are planning on going paperless with your finances, be sure to have a backup, and maybe back that up, too.  An automated cloud service like Carbonite + an automated hard drive backup like Seagate is a powerful combination. Use the promo code “APPO” from me to get two free months of Carbonite backup service.

Many coupons expired at the end of last year, so coupon clippers can save a lot of space by starting over, or signing up for digital coupons from places like CouponCabin.com, or just looking for deals as needed on places like RetailMeNot.com.

Organize and slim down the collection of shoppers club cards by using the CardStar app to enter your shopper bar code into your smart phone or tablet.

Receipts for minor purchases that are not tax related can either be stored for one year in a box labelled current year (2013), or they can be scanned into an app like ShoeBoxed.  Either way, they should come off the kitchen counter and desktop.

Many people are now reviewing only their online bank statements, but still receive paper statements that they never open. Make the call to cancel your paper statement if there is no other reason to archive them. If you still want to save a copy, file them in an email or document folder on your computer and take up no physical space at all. Beware, many banks only save the last 6-12 months of statements, so be sure to save an e-copy to your computer if you want to save them longer, and back that up. (see above)

Take 5 minutes to check your credit report at www.AnnualCreditReport.com. It actually takes 5 minutes, and is free once a year. If the information is correct, the is no need to print the report.  If there are errors, which a recent report stated 40% of us have, you can take steps to correct them.

Want to be a financial organizing superhero?  Take another 5 minutes to call your HR department and max out your 401K contributions, at least to your company match level, and maybe even to the pre-tax plan max which is usually higher. The company match means free money, so it’s definitely worth your 5 minutes.

What other Financial Spring Cleaning steps are you taking?

A colleague of mine visited my newly redesigned office last week. We were talking color, and she asked where my inspiration came from.

You already saw the furniture I came to this office with. I didn’t have the funds or the stomach to replace or paint everything, so black was a given.

You might have noticed the little leopard chair with the recovered seat. Although it’s a neutral, it made sense to incorporate a brown into the office. The blinds would stay, and if all went well, I would keep the hardwood floor, so there would be brown tones in the room. So, oddly, a couple of brown pieces figured heavily into the inspirations.

I thought I really, really, really wanted a pink office, but I couldn’t find a pink that I could sit in. I’m much happier with the blues. What I knew for sure is that I wanted the bookcase to be an accent color, not the same as the walls. Here are my picks.

home office makeover

This is a color direction, but not a full color story. The yellow goes on the walls. The gray goes on the bookcase. The right white (you know there are a million white choices, right?) gets chosen for the trim.

So let’s talk accent colors. This is where most people go wrong, by not telling the whole story. Bring all of the colors together and play with them. This is where I bring in my pink.

home office makeover

Nice, but not quite right. Feels a little bubblegum to me. Let’s try another combination.

home office makeoverThese ended up being the colors that informed all the rest of my choices. I still carry these swatches around town in my purse, so I can pick up the perfect accessory if I see it. If you aren’t as confident with color selection, I can help you with your very own custom color kit that fits in your purse.

A trick that helps most people is to look at the swatches in the same concentration as they will occur in the room. So more yellow, less pink and blue.

At this point, there’s one more mistake to avoid. Many people will pick a color for the walls and never look back. However, it’s a good idea to use your initial color story to just inform your product selection. Paints can be mixed in a million colors, but your accessories and other choices are manufactured in limited selections. So start with a palette and adjust your choices after you’ve made a few product selections. The sofa that Yu end up loving may indeed be a blue, but it may be a shade different than the one you chose for your blue walls, for example. It’s great to be able to choose Color with No Regrets!

By the way, there are plenty of high-tech ways to do color selection, and I use boards when needed, like this one I made for a client,, but there’s no better way to choose colors than with good old color chips in the space where you are actually making changes. (Below, just in case you’ve been able to resist the siren call of Pinterest.)

I wanted a functional colorful office with lots of feminine touches. What do you think?
