DIY Upcycle Marble Trinket Tray

DIY Upcycle Marble Trinket Tray

Are you ready for gift giving season yet? If not, please come join me and Habitat for Humanity, Montgomery and Delaware counties on Nov 29, 6-8 pm, to make a great gift from items that you can often find in a Habitat ReStore. A marble tray that you make yourself can be a substantial gift, and you’ll also be helping Habitat for Humanity further their mission to provide decent, affordable housing in our area.

There are a few hardcore Habitat fans among my readers who are ready to register without even seeing what the project is, so, here is the registration link for our Nov 29 DIY make and take workshop.

Am I the only one who nearly weeps when I see large slabs, or even remnants, of beautiful stone in a recycling pile? That rock took millions of years to get that beautiful, and we homeowners make design decisions that last only decades. Thankfully, Habitat is one place where you can reclaim perfectly usable stone for your projects.

They also have lots of other great materials, like these orphaned drawers, just waiting to be made into storage drawers or other projects. But don’t let me get distracted…

For our DIY make and take, we’re doing stone on a smaller scale. We’ll be taking granite marble and quartz remnants, along with hardware found at Habitat, and repurposing them into lovely trays for your home. Oops, I meant for gifts. (I won’t tell if you make the first one for yourself.)

Marble trays are wonderful for presenting cheese and crackers, but that’s so (yawn) boring! Get them out in the rest of your home! Trays are an essential decor item for highlighting little spots of loveliness.

They can also make the mundane seem special. Trying to eat healthy? Set out three fruits each morning on this beautiful slab, and you can’t help but go for them during the day.

Trays are also great organizing tools. A large dresser top is easily cluttered, but a sweet little tray like this is a beautiful display highlighting your favorite things.

We’re going to be making either a small tray (approximately 6″ x 12″) like those shown here, or a larger tray out of 12×12 stone. Your choice is based on available materials at the DIY event. A quick search for “marble jewelry tray” or “marble trinket tray” shows that these easily sell for about $30 online.

Register for this Habitat 4 Humanity DIY event by clicking here. We always have fun, and the folks at Habitat will throw in a serious coupon to use at the ReStore. Heck, you can totally make your money back if you play your gifting cards smart!

This holiday season I’m helping Wayfair spread the cheer with their #BlogItForward campaign. For every blog that includes the badge, Wayfair will donate $50 to Habitat for Humanity.   Winter months are a bit of a trial for me (understatement), and many other people. But I’m listening to advice from author Laura Vanderkam and putting… Continue Reading

As most people and stores are gearing up for Black Friday and Cyber Monday deals, I’d like to let you in on a different kind of shopping (and sneaky organizing). This year, “shop your house” BEFORE you shop for the holidays. We often use the idea of “shopping your house” for redesigns. We look for… Continue Reading
